Are you eligible for a limited licence?
Before you do anything else, you should take our screening test to check that you are able to apply for a limited licence.
Our team of lawyers have more than 20 years’ experience. Over that time, we have prepared many limited licences and appeared in court for many clients.
Limited licences tend to be very time consuming for all involved and can cost a lot of money - most lawyers will charge several thousand dollars because they are very time intensive to prepare.
We have also seen various "DIY" or hybrid sites which can still charge a lot of money, but leave people with poorly drafted documents and no idea what to do once they get to Court.

A limited licence is exactly what it sounds like. It is a licence that is limited. A limited licence allows you to drive for specific reasons, to and from specific locations and only within certain dates and times.

You need to prove that if you don't have a limited licence, it will cause "extreme hardship" to you or "undue hardship" to another person (such as a family member). Basically, you have to show the court that there will be a significant hardship if you cannot drive for essential purposes (such as for work or childcare).

The bot will ask you a series of questions about the reasons you no longer have a licence, your history of earlier suspensions or disqualifications (if any), and some personal questions about you, your life, and the reason you need to be able to drive again. The answers you provide will form the basis for the documents that will be filed in court.

You will need to provide (among other things):
• Your full name and address
• The date you were disqualified or suspended and the reason for it
• Evidence that (if applicable) you have paid any relevant court fine or costs
• Information regarding your work, childcare, or other essential purpose (for which you need to drive)
• Information about the days, times, locations you need to drive

The bot interview will take around 20-30 minutes depending on how much information it needs from you. It will help if you have all the necessary information (see above) before you start. However, you can always stop the process part-way through and come back to it if you need to.

No. The Court simply issues an order which authorises you to apply for a limited licence. The actual limited licence must be issued by Waka Kotahi/NZ Transport Agency. Although we will do everything we can to speed up this part of the process, you should be prepared for there to be some delay on the NZTA end. We will provide some tips and tricks to minimise delay as much as possible.

Yes, you can. Although the majority of people apply for a limited licence for work purposes (which is why it is often referred to as a “work licence”) the legal test is simply that you will suffer extreme hardship or others will suffer undue hardship if a licence is not granted. That means, for example, that if you have childcare responsibilities or other responsibilities that require you to be able to drive, then you should be able to obtain an order authorising your limited licence.

No one can guarantee this because ultimately this is a legal proceeding and therefore the final decision is made by a District Court Judge. However, in our experience, provided the documents are appropriately drafted (to meet the legal test) and reasonable conditions are sought, then it is highly likely that an order authorising licence will be granted.

In addition to the fee charged by us for drafting documents, the Court will charge a filing fee.
The fee is $171.00 if you lost your licence due to a disqualification, or $269.00 plus a sealing fee of $67.00 if you lost your licence due to demerit points.
Waka Kotahi/New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) will also charge you an application fee for the issuing of the limited licence. NZTA currently charges $48.70 for the application fee.
At the end of your disqualification or suspension period, you will also have to pay a fee to NZTA to have your normal licence reinstated. Currently the fee is $48.00 if your disqualification is less than 12 months, or $100.10 if more than 12 months.

We cannot control the NZTA part of the process; however, when your final documents are sent to you will we will also provide you with some tips and tricks to try and minimise any delay with NZTA.
